The Emily Guthrie Legacy Society

The Emily Guthrie Legacy SocietyIn 1910 Dr. Donald Guthrie arrived in Sayre and founded a multi-specialty group practice modeled after the Mayo Clinic, where he had just completed his surgical residency. In 1916, Dr. Guthrie wed Emily Baker Guthrie and they enjoyed 42 years of marriage together. Upon his death in 1958, Emily inherited the estate. When she died in 1976 at the age of 85, the residue of her estate, totaling more than $16 million, was left to the Robert Packer Hospital and the Donald Guthrie Foundation for Medical Research.

That transformational bequest helped Guthrie evolve into a major non-profit integrated health care delivery system, with hundreds of physicians and advanced practice providers, four hospitals, 45 sub-specialty and primary care sites in 21 communities, home health and home care services, and a research institute.

Because of the vision of Emily Guthrie and her generous estate gift, we have created The Emily Guthrie Legacy Society to promote and recognize those with great foresight and love for our community who have chosen to invest in the future of Guthrie and the health care of the region.
